SPHU PROGRAMMES:
In the past years, low levels of farmer’s incentives, shortage of working capital, decrease in returns coupled with insecurity and wars lead to a sharp decline in farming in Uganda.
The livestock population that had reached a record high in the 1960s drastically declined between 1971 and the late 1980s due to the bad political environment that saw farmers lose many of their animals to rebels fighting against the various governments in power at the time, cattle rustlers from Karamoja, Pocot and Tukanaland in Kenya, and epidemics due to decline in vetnary services as a result of poor administration , lack of drugs, poor infrastructure and low literacy levels among farmers .
Since 1990, Uganda has come a long way. The central government has created numerous avenues for re-activation of agricultural practice in the country, and encouraged private firms to create packages that enhance development such as literacy drives, developing market strategies that are designed to lower the poverty levels of small scale farmers, offer technical services in terms of training and mobilization of farmers, sponsorship of sustainable small scale projects in all districts and provision of the necessary logistical support.
Send a pregnant Heifer Uganda(SPHU) programs are but a fragment of a shared responsibility. These programs are aimed at realizinga complete live stock management program. By sourcing for funding for projects, identifying vulnerable communities depending on extensive study drills, designing complete self-sustaining projects, procuring, holding and transporting livestock to their distribution points. We will further provide training to farmers; project follow-up/ monitoring, and marketing of farmer’s produce/animals at good prices. |
